Red-tailed Hawks, Tulsa, OK

"Kay and Jay Red Hawk", red-tailed hawks in Tulsa, OK, 2008
The first egg hatched on March 31, and the second on April 2. The older eyas grew very rapidly, while the second seemed to struggle from the beginning. Sadly, the little one died on April 24. The members of the forum named the departed eyas "Spirit". The older eyas, now dubbed "Thunder" continued to thrive and successfully fledged about 6:00 AM on May 24. Thunder stuck pretty close to the KJRH tower, and by Monday she made her way back to the nest, although no one's sure exactly how!

9 APRIL 2008 - HOUSTON, WE HAVE A THIRD EGG!
Scout has laid a third egg. Now that she has a "clutch." we can expect her to incubate these eggs 24/7. She may even lay a fourth one. Once again, Orville, Scouts mate, was NOT sitting outside the nest box, as usual! Yo, Orville, where are you buddy?

Ohio Peregrine Falcon Scout 2008 - Part 5

6 APRIL 2008 - HOUSTON, WE HAVE A SECOND EGG!
Around 2 PM it looked like Scout was preparing to lay a second egg. Her labor was very long. She finally laid her egg at 7:12 PM. Exhausted, she spent about ten minutes standing over the egg before she settled down to incubate it. Orville, Scouts mate, was NOT sitting outside the nest box, as usual! Orville was away from the nest box, so there were no vocal celebrations. It is hoped he will be back at dawn to bring her something to eat.

Ohio Peregrine Falcon Scout 2008 - Part 4

29 March 2008 - HOUSTON, WE HAVE AN EGG!
Finally, after much trying, Scout, an Ohio Peregrine falcon has laid her first egg of 2008! Orville, Scouts mate, was still sitting outside the nest box, as usual!

Last year, 2007, Scout laid her first clutch of eggs (4), but they were infertile. The cause could have been Scout's young age. She hatched in 2005 from the New Center/Fisher Building in Detroit, Michigan. The adult female that reared Scout is Alpha from the 2001 Columbus nest.
Orville was seen eating one of the eggs. It is natural for peregrines to eat their infertile eggs. The other 3 eggs were removed for testing (they didn't look right) and they, too, were infertile.
